Transactional Analysis (TA for short) is a theory of personality and communication. Eric Berne started to develop TA in the 1960s in response to the increasing jargonisation of psychology and psychiatry. He believed that the client as well as the therapist should have a way of explaining what was going on for them.
The fundamentals of TA:
• you and I are people of worth and value (i.e. we are "OK"),
• at times we behave in ways that are not-OK, when we do this we are following old strategies,
• we can change these strategies and update the information we are using to make decisions.
When I (a TA therapist) work with you (a client), we take joint responsibility for the sessions; working together towards the change(s) you want to make. Often people have come across TA theory in management training - the theories are the same in counselling and coaching. Click HERE for more info on TA.
